The Study on the Disability in Later Life and the Characteristics of Community Environments
Koo Bon-Mi

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of community environment factors on ADL/IADL disability in the Korean old adults. This study uses the Survey of Living Conditions and Welfare Needs of Korean older Persons in 2011 as individual?level and 251 local government data from KOSIS(Korean Statistical Information Service) as community?level. Hierarchical Linear Model is used to combine individual?level data with community-level data. Samples consist of 3,642(40.9%) men and 5,260(59.1%) women aged 65 above. As the results, first, disability in later life is associated with sex, education, family income, subjective health and cognitive functioning. Second, there is statistically significant difference in disability score by the local community. The increase of disability is related with the decline of the economic status and the decrease of the number of welfare facilities for the aged in their community. These findings reveal that community?level factors effect the disability in later life after controlling individual?level factors. This study underscores the need for attention in the community environment where older people live to postpone the deterioration of disability in later life.
